Statement of Values
We acknowledge that privilege exists in various forms, including but not limited to racial, economic, gender, and educational privilege. Privilege affords certain individuals and groups unearned advantages and access to opportunities that others may be systematically denied. Recognizing our own privileges is a critical step in understanding the broader context of inequality and injustice. We commit to using our privileged positions to listen, learn, and amplify marginalized voices. By confronting and addressing our privileges, we aim to foster an environment of empathy, allyship, and proactive engagement in dismantling the structures that perpetuate inequity and oppression.
We acknowledge that we are uninvited settlers living and working on the traditional and stolen lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, and that while we work towards decolonization we continue to benefit from this theft.
Anti-Oppression
We commit to recognizing and actively challenging all forms of oppression, including but not limited to racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, and classism. Our organization stands against any structures and systems that perpetuate inequality and injustice. We pledge to create and maintain an environment where every individual feels safe, valued, and empowered to express their full identities without fear of discrimination or marginalization.
Decolonization
We acknowledge the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous peoples and communities worldwide. Our commitment to decolonization involves honoring Indigenous sovereignty, knowledge, and practices. We strive to dismantle colonial frameworks within our organization and broader society by promoting Indigenous voices, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives, and fostering respectful and reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities.
Social Justice
Social justice is at the heart of our mission. We are dedicated to addressing and rectifying systemic inequities and injustices. This involves advocating for policies and practices that promote equitable access to resources, opportunities, and rights for all individuals. We recognize that achieving social justice requires ongoing learning, unlearning, and collective action to transform societal structures and create a more just and fairer world.
Commitment to Disability Justice
Commitment to disability justice entails recognizing and actively challenging the systemic barriers and prejudices that marginalize people with disabilities. It involves advocating for inclusive policies, accessible environments, and equal opportunities for all individuals regardless of their abilities. True commitment to disability justice requires not just awareness but also tangible actions to dismantle ableism in all its forms, promote disability rights, amplify disabled voices, and ensure that everyone has the resources and support needed to thrive. It's about fostering a society where disability is respected as a natural part of human diversity, and where everyone can live with dignity, autonomy, and full participation in all aspects of life.
Implementation and Accountability
Our commitment to these values requires continuous reflection, education, and action. We will regularly assess our practices and policies to ensure alignment with our values and make necessary adjustments. We welcome feedback from our community and are dedicated to transparency and accountability in our efforts to uphold these principles. Together, we can create a transformative and inclusive environment that stands as a model for equity and justice.
Inclusion
Inclusion means creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and valued. We celebrate diversity in all its forms and recognize that true inclusion involves not only the presence of diverse individuals but also their active participation and representation in all aspects of our organization. We are committed to ensuring that our practices, policies, and culture reflect our dedication to inclusivity, where differences are not just tolerated but embraced and leveraged to enrich our collective experience.
By living these values, we strive to contribute to a world where all individuals can thrive, free from oppression and inequity, and where the richness of our diverse identities is celebrated and harnessed for the collective good.
